One in 13 kids in the U.S. has a food allergy. On Halloween that means about two kids in every class can't eat most of what they're handed.
The teal pumpkin says "I have something for you too." That's it. No forms, no registration, no signup. Paint a pumpkin teal, buy some non-food stuff, put it next to the candy bowl.
What to Give Instead of Candy
Stickers — a pack of 100 Halloween sticker sheets is $6 on Amazon. Glow sticks — a pack of 100 bracelets is $10 at Walmart and kids go wild for them. Bouncy balls, plastic spiders, vampire teeth, mini Play-Doh, erasers, temporary tattoos.
The rule: nothing with food. Not even "gluten-free candy" — because cross-contact is real and you don't want to be the house that sent a kid to the ER because you thought Skittles were safe this week. Processing lines change.
The Two-Bowl Method
You don't have to go all-in. Keep your candy bowl. Add a second bowl of non-food treats. When a kid comes to the door, ask "candy or a toy?" Kids with allergies pick the toy. Kids without allergies pick the toy too, about half the time, because glow bracelets are cooler than a mini Snickers.
I started doing this in 2023 and I spend the same as I did on candy alone. The toy bowl costs $10-15 for 100 items and it lasts the whole night.

What to Skip
- "Allergy-friendly" candy from specialty sites. It's $12 a bag. The whole point of the Teal Pumpkin is to offer something that isn't food at all, so you don't have to verify ingredient lists and processing statements.
- Homemade treats. Even if they're safe, parents of allergy kids won't let them eat anything unwrapped from a stranger. Don't be insulted. It's not about you.
- Cheap plastic that breaks immediately. A spider that snaps in two at the door is worse than nothing. Spend $1 more on better-quality favors.
Where to Get a Teal Pumpkin
You can paint one. A can of teal spray paint is $4 at Walmart and you can use a real pumpkin or a craft pumpkin from Dollar Tree that you keep year to year. Some Target stores sell pre-painted ceramic teal pumpkins for $5 in October.
