I made a mistake in 2022. I put on Coraline for my 5-year-old because I remembered it as "that cool stop-motion movie." I forgot about the button eyes. I forgot about the Other Mother. I forgot the hand. He didn't sleep for two nights and I spent a week explaining that buttons are just buttons.

So I built a list. Twelve movies, sorted by how scary they actually are, with honest age calls. No "it's fine for the whole family" lies.

Tier 1: Barely Spooky (Ages 5+)

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown — Not scary at all. 25 minutes. Watch it every year. Free on Apple TV+ in October. The biggest risk is your kid asking why Charlie Brown got a rock.

Room on the Broom — Animated, 25 minutes, based on the Julia Donaldson book. A witch picks up animal friends. Zero scares. My kids watched this on repeat at age 4.

Spooky Jack — Mild ghost stuff, cartoonish, fine for little ones. Forgettable but harmless.

Tier 2: A Little Creepy (Ages 6-8)

Hocus Pocus — The Sanderson sisters hang a kid and suck his soul out. That's the scary part. The rest is comedy. Age 6 if they can handle the opening scene, age 7-8 otherwise. Streaming on Disney+.

Hotel Transylvania — Monster comedy. Not scary. Age 5 honestly but the 6-8 group is where it really lands.

Casper — The 1995 one. Has some sad moments and a couple of jump scenes. Age 7 and up. The ghost story is more melancholy than scary but there are a couple of "oh no" moments for a 5-year-old.

Tier 3: Genuinely Spooky (Ages 8-10)

Coraline — Here it is. Age 8 minimum. The button eyes, the Other Mother's true form, the hand that crawls. Beautiful, brilliant, and too much for a 6-year-old. I learned this the hard way.

Monster House — A house eats people. It's scarier than you remember. Age 8. The reveal of what the house actually is hits harder than you expect.

Paranorman — Zombies, a witch's curse, some real dread. Age 8. The story has heart but the first 20 minutes are unsettling and stay unsettling.

Tier 4: Real Halloween Movies (Ages 10-13)

The Nightmare Before Christmas — People call this a kids' movie. It's not a young kids' movie. Oogie Boogie is a burlap sack full of bugs who gambles with lives. Age 9-10. Disney+.

Beetlejuice — Age 11-12. The "nice model" bit, the swearing, the whole afterlife bureaucracy. Funny for adults and older kids. Too much for under 10.

Hocus Pocus 2 — Less scary than the original. Age 7. Fine for younger if they've seen the first one. Nobody's favorite but it works.

The Addams Family (2019 animated) — Age 8. Mild, funny, more weird than scary. Wednesday carries it.

What to Skip With Young Kids

  • The Witches (2020). The witch reveal is nightmare fuel for a 6-year-old. I don't care what the rating says.
  • Frankenweenie. Black and white, slow, a dead dog comes back. Sad more than scary but sad in a way that wrecks a 5-year-old.
  • Anything Gremlins. Age 10 minimum. Those gremlins are meaner than you remember and the kitchen scene is a lot.

The Rule for Movie Night

Watch it yourself first. I know that's annoying when you just want to put something on. But the difference between "fine at 6" and "ruins a kid's week at 6" is one scene you forgot about. Twenty minutes of pre-watching saves you a week of "can I sleep in your room."

Pick the tier, pick the movie, make popcorn. The movie doesn't have to scare them to be a Halloween tradition. Some years ours is just Charlie Brown and hot chocolate and that's a better night than the year I tried Coraline.
